Chief Sustainability Officer Virginia Alzina has set out EV Cargo’s new vision for sustainability to mark Earth Day – a global call for world leaders, businesses and innovators to take concerted action to help the planet.
Virginia hosted a webinar to outline how EV Cargo can help to make a big, positive difference by taking simple measures to improve its sustainability. The company is working towards carbon neutrality and increasing its performance across a range of sustainability metrics. It is also looking for staff members to come forward as sustainability champions.
Virginia defined sustainability as “meeting our needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs”.
And she said that becoming a more environmentally sustainable operation would bring huge knock-on benefits for EV Cargo.
The changes could help EV Cargo to:
- Reduce costs
- Reduce risk
- Bring in new revenue streams
- Attract new talent
- Attract new capital
- Increase market share
- Bring improvements to the company’s reputation.
EV Cargo is looking to become a signatory to the UN’s Global Compact, which is based around human rights, labour standards, environmental protections and anti-corruption measures, as its 10 guiding principles seem to be part of the company’s day-to-day operations already.
Virginia highlighted what other major brands are doing in terms of sustainability. She said UPS, for example, believes that by simply asking its drivers to avoid making left turns across traffic (or right turns in countries with left-hand roads) wherever possible it can save 10 million gallons of fuel a year and cut its CO2 emissions by 100,000 tons – the equivalent to taking 21,000 cars off the road.
Virginia said: “My role is to set the sustainability strategy, data collection and reporting at EV Cargo and to align with international best practice requirements.
“I’m looking forward to working with you all to bring sustainability up a notch at EV Cargo.”
